Winter with a Local

Jan 14, 2023/Blog, Winter

Winter has arrived! And whether you like it or not, it’s here to stay. So why not bundle up and embrace it! My name is Andrew Hiltz. I’m a photographer, videographer and former Saskatchewanderer. This is my guide to a fun-filled winter day in YQR.

Itinerary

  • 1. Core Coffee
If you’re like me, you can’t function without coffee. So the obvious first stop of the day is for a cup of morning brown. This place is my go-to. The owners, Tim & Amy, are music lovers that brew next-level coffee, bake incredible goodies (with GF & Vegan options), and look after their community. Did I mention it’s under the same roof as their clothing store T+A Vintage?

  • 2. Fresh Air Experience
Rent or buy some cross-country skis, pick up discs for Disc Golf, and grab anything else you’ll need for a winter adventure. FAE’s super knowledgeable staff know their stuff. You have questions, they have answers. Just like that, you’re geared up! Time to go get the day!

  • 3. Science Centre Cross Country Ski Trails
Now let’s put them skis to work! With groomed trails for both skate skis & classics, this short circuit has a handful of routes that weave and wind through the trees along Wascana Lake. The outside track is about 1.5km and has very little elevation to deal with, making it perfect for beginners. If you’re feeling adventurous and want some elevation, follow the trail east, past the Science Centre, and get to know the routes around Wascana Hill.
  • 4. Wann Izakaya Japanese Gastropub
What better way to warm up on a cold winter day than with a hot bowl of ramen? My go-to order: the ‘Spicy Tonkotsu.’ *chef’s kiss*

  • 5. Douglas Park Disc Golf
Did you know Disc Golf was invented in Saskatchewan? True story. Did you know it’s a free, family-friendly activity? Also true story. Douglas Park, located within Wascana Park, is the perfect location for an 18 hole course. Challenge a friend while taking in some stunning views along the way.
  • 6. Victoria Park Skating Rink
Lace-up and go for a rip in the heart of downtown. If you don’t own skates, the ‘Skate Shack’ near the ice surface will lend you a pair. Visit reginadowntown.ca to find their hours.

  • 7. Pile O’ Bones Brewing Company
To finish off the day, we’re going to one of the cities most popular craft breweries to drink beer on their patio! Yes, you heard that right, their patio. POB’s invites you to join their polar bear club by bundling up and enjoying a pint outdoors. Who said patio season couldn’t be a year-round experience?

In the spirit of reconciliation

We would like to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty 4 territory and the traditional territory of the Anihšinābēk, Nêhiyawak, Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota peoples, and the original home of the Métis/Michif Nation. We recognize that both Indigenous and Métis people are the spiritual and cultural keepers of their traditional lands and still to this day, continue to practice their values, languages, beliefs and knowledge.
